OUR MUSEUMS

The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, as an organization and individuals, are committed to the preservation of our Texas heritage. It was that goal that brought the organization together in 1891.

The efforts of our early Daughters preserved the Alamo which has become the standard that the world uses to recognize “Texas.” That work did not stop there.

Museums owned and/or operated by DRT help to preserve and promote our unique Texas History. DRT is preserving the physical structures of these historic places and artifacts from the Republic of Texas era. The public can see and touch our ancestor’s way of life at the Alamo, French Legation, Gaines Oliphant House and Republic of Texas Museum.

The Museums owned and/or operated by DRT include:

The Alamo

Site of the early Mission San Antonio de Valero which was constructed in 1724. This is one of the most famous battlegrounds of the Texas Revolution.

Admission to the Alamo is free. The Alamo is open every day of the year except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Our hours are 9:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. Monday through Saturday and 10:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. on Sunday. To better serve visitors, the Alamo will remain open on Fridays and Saturdays until 7 P.M. during the months of June, July and August. For further information, see http://www.thealamo.org/main.html

The Long Barrack Museum

Gaines Oliphant Log House

The Gaines-Oliphant house is a log cabin built around 1815 and is the oldest standing log structure in the state. James Taylor Gaines was one of seven drafters and signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence and also the owner of the Gaines Ferry. The ferry was an important link to bring immigrants and many needed provisions into Texas. The Gaines-Oliphant House is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Gaines-Oliphant Log House is not currently open to the public.
